Tucked away along Callaghans Road in the Victorian High Country, Packers High Country Horse Treks is the kind of place that asks you to slow down the moment you arrive. Ancient country, wide mountain air, and a rhythm shaped by horses, weather and time.

Riding through this landscape felt cinematic in the most understated way. Horses moving steadily beneath us as we climbed and descended through bush that instantly brings The Man from Snowy River to mind. There’s a weight to this country — steep, rugged and unapologetic — and riding through it gives you a deep appreciation for both the land and the animals that know it so well.

The accommodation reflected that same honesty. Old bushman shacks, weathered and simple, surrounded by horses and open space. Nothing polished, nothing unnecessary — just a place to rest, listen, and feel part of the landscape rather than separate from it.

Some of the quietest moments stayed with me the longest. Sitting on the deck of the big house, painting as the light shifted across the hills. Watching the day move without interruption. These were the moments that grounded the experience — the in-between spaces that don’t ask anything of you except to be present.

Spending time with Helen, the owner, added another layer to the stay. Her connection to the land and its history runs deep, and hearing those stories gave context to everything around us — the horses, the huts, the tracks etched into the hillsides.

I left with a renewed respect for the landscape and a lingering sense of how powerful it is to move through country at the pace of a horse.
