Rolling Stills Stories

The Rolling Stills Journal

The Rolling Stills Journal documents life across regional and outback Australia, with a focus on Western Australia’s communities, cultural events and rural landscapes. Through documentary photography and storytelling, this blog explores grassroots events, everyday moments and the people who shape these places, forming an evolving visual record as Western Australia approaches its bicentenary.

The Rolling Stills blog is a place for stories — the kind found off the beaten track, between destinations, and in the people who give regional Australia its heartbeat.

Through photography and words, I document life on the road, in the bush, and within the communities that shape this country. From outback race days and grassroots sporting events to remote pubs, family life and quiet moments in between, each post is a snapshot of a time and place worth remembering.

As Western Australia’s bicentenary approaches, this journal has taken on an even deeper purpose. I’ve been reaching out to outback and regional communities to explore, document and help enshrine the grassroots cultural events that have played such an important role in shaping identity over the past 200 years.

At the heart of this work are themes of resilience, collaboration, inclusion and reconciliation — stories that bring people together and reflect the strength of community across generations.

Alongside event photography, each project also includes the creation of a public mural, designed in consultation with local historians, community members and stakeholders. These murals are intended as a snapshot in time — capturing not just the event itself, but what it means to the people who keep it alive.

Each mural and accompanying photography gallery is shared through the Rolling Stills blog and social media, allowing audiences to follow the journey and, in time, retrace it themselves. The murals become tourism landmarks, offering visitors context and connection, and helping them understand the cultural and historical significance of these events beyond the surface.

The Rolling Stills Journal is an evolving archive of people, places and moments — a living record of regional Australia as we move toward the bicentenary, and a celebration of the communities that continue to shape its story.
